NorFlex is a pilot project where NODES operates a flexibility market in the DSO Agder Energi Nett and Glitre Energi Nett grids in southern Norway. The market opened for trading during autumn of 2020, and the pilot is set to finalize by April 2023. This report presents NODES experience with operating the market between October 2020 to March 2022.
In Norway more than 64% of all new car registrations in 2021 were electric vehicles (EVs). We have investigated the opportunities, challenges, and potential value of E- mobility as part of a flexible energy system. This paper provides insight into how to accommodate E-mobility in the local distribution grid, in addition to functioning as an asset to manage grid congestion and system services with a marked-based approach. The project has developed and tested technology and business models enabling more efficient and sustainable power grid operations. This includes utilising market- based flexibility from the growing number of domestic EV chargers, and hence accommodating E-mobility in the distribution grid. Key to this project in NODES and its innovative approach is an integrated market design that allows for the reservation (LongFlex) and activation (ShortFlex) of local flexibility to be transacted between Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) and the DSO & TSO. Results from the project show a willingness to implement smart charging, optimised to both hourly energy prices and local explicit flexibility price in NODES. Flexibility volumes have been increasing as FSPs have developed their system to support the new digital value chain and the DSO has automated their processes in GridTools.
As flexibility markets continue to develop there is a requirement to investigate nearer to real time procurement of flexibility services. With growing volumes of flexibility procured at a distribution level, there is also a need to address the imbalances that result for balance responsible suppliers when the DSO procures flexibility from independent aggregators. IntraFlex is developing a market, with NODES as market operator, to test nearer to real time flexibility procurement and the potential for supplier imbalances to be minimised through market mechanisms. Early results indicate that there is interest in providing these services and in particular larger volume bids posted by the DSO (over 2MW) cleared more quickly than those of a smaller size. This is invaluable learning as markets for flexibility develop.
CINELDI is a research centre for environment-friendly energy research (FME), focusing on the future flexible, intelligent and robust electricity distribution grid. CINELDI has 29 partners from the Norwegian power industry. The partners are involved in the centre via research, laboratory activities and pilot projects. This paper describes a common process for pilot projects established within FME CINELDI, with main focus on the pilot process and how pilot projects at user partner are initiated, executed and finalised, exemplified with a description of the following selected pilot projects: Pilot projects at Skagerak Energilab related to transition to island mode (Case 1.1) and optimization of local balancing with batteries (Case 1.2), and pilot projects with flexibility markets to solve voltage problems due to bottlenecks in the distribution grid (mainland) (Linja - Case 2) and on an island (Haugaland Kraft Nett – Case 3).
Paving the way for flexibility highlights the challenges faced with the ongoing energy transition and how the NODES market design can help address these challenges.
