Hydro One Continues the Flexibility Initiative with NODES

Hydro One Continues the Flexibility Initiative with NODES

In line with Ontario’s ambitions to transition towards a more modern and resilient grid, Hydro One, the province’s largest electricity transmission and distribution service provider, is advancing its Flexibility Initiative to support the deployment of Non‑Wires Solutions (NWS). NWS such as demand response and energy storage, help to address local and regional grid constraints to defer grid infrastructure upgrades.

Hydro One’s Flexibility Initiative marks a significant step in enabling Ontario’s clean energy transition, unlocking new pathways for customers and partners to contribute to local grid resilience.

Building on the success of the Flexibility Initiative in 2025, Hydro One will continue its flexibility procurement program starting June 1st 2026.

The Flexibility Initiative will leverage the NODES Platform to reserve (LongFlex™) and activate flexibility (ShortFlex™) from registered Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs).

Hydro One invites Commercial and Industrial (C&I) customers, Aggregators, and Energy Management Providers with flexible assets to participate — including controllable loads, behind-the-meter energy storage, and dispatchable generation.

How It Works

  1. Publication of grid needs:

Hydro One publishes grid constraints on the NODES Platform, providing transparent insight into grid needs and incentivizing FSPs to offer flexibility in the affected regions.

  1. Publication of LongFlexTM Requests:

Hydro One publishes flexibility reservation tenders (LongFlex™) on NODES Platform

  1. Offer Flexibility:
  1. Offer flexibility long-term (LongFlexTM):

Registered FSPs offer flexibility by responding to the published reservation tenders. Through LongFlexTM flexibility offers, FSPs commit to reserve flexibility and to make available to Hydro One in exchange for financial remuneration.

  1. Offer flexibility near-term (ShortFlexTM):

In addition to LongFlex TM reservation contracts, Hydro One will also consider standalone ShortFlexTM activation contracts.
