Flexibility markets are becoming a key instrument for system operators to manage congestion and unlock capacity in distribution grids. But flexibility activation without coordination between system operators can create new grid constraints instead of solving them.
To address this challenge, NODES has developed the Market Coordination Module in close collaboration with the DSO HEDNO and TSO IPTO in Greece as part of the EU-funded OPENTUNITY project — a new module within the NODES Trading Platform designed to ensure secure, transparent, and reliable coordination between system operators throughout the flexibility procurement process.
🔍 Key capabilities are:
- A Coordinator Role to oversee market operations and support system-level decisions
- Dynamic grid node thresholds to define and adjust capacity limits in real time
- An integrated Traffic Light System that signals capacity violations linked to grid node thresholds
- A built-in real-time messaging service to enable direct communication and collaboration between system operators
The Market Coordination Module is used by:
- HEDNO (DSO) and IPTO (TSO) in Greece for congestion management and balancing services, in a pilot phase within the OPENTUNITY project, for procuring flexibility in a common market.
- Fingrid (TSO) and Helen Sähköverkko (DSO) in Finland to coordinate flexibility procurement at national and regional levels in the FinFlex market.
The Market Coordination Module reflects NODES’ continued commitment to building market solutions in close partnership with system operators, ensuring flexibility markets scale safely and efficiently across Europe.
